January Effect

Due to a year-end selling to create tax losses or recognize capital gains, stocks have historically tended to rise significantly during the period starting on the last day of December, ending on the fourth trading day of January. The selling depresses the stocks value, but not their actual worth, so investors quickly buy in, causing the January rally.
